First listed with us in August 2006 we were very excited to see Mr James Halliday review this wine in his 2007 Australian Wine Companion and deliver a verdict of 90 points! A little after the fact perhaps (we don’t have much of it left) Mr Halliday’s review is a neat illustration of what we do; exceptional wines at a very rare price. Enjoy some soon.
Viognier (pronounced vee-OHHN-nyay) is gaining in popularity in Australia as a dry white varietal table wine and is also seen in red table wines blended with Shiraz. Plantings of Viognier are increasing but are still relatively rare. Made as a pure fruit white table wine Viognier can be enjoyed in the same context as Riesling or Sauvignon Blanc. Viognier has an interesting history so make sure you have a quick look at the links below.
A lean fruit wine with wide appeal. Lots of primary fruit, fresh crisp acid and free of sugar this wine is both sophisticated and approachable.
Lots of characters here (some seem to be a bit contradictory admittedly). Violets, grapefruit, green rockmelon and tropical fruit overtones. Some nice honey characters develop on standing.
None.
The palate is a bit more straight forward. Plenty of fruit and acid. Melon and limes up front with a clean crisp grapefruit finish.
A superb drink straight out of the fridge as an afternoon aperitif. Equally good with delicate spicy asian food or seafood.
The ageing potential of this wine remains to be seen (and it may be quite substantial) but for the time being we are recommending early consumption.
